The mistake that most people make is that they are too concerned with what's in it for them and not thinking how they can help others. By helping others you not only make a name for yourself, you also become the "go to" person and opportunities start to flow through you. My advice is to is to get involved and take an active role in your networking. Participate in organizations, events, professional groups and social clubs that offer opportunities for you to meet and greet others. With the advent of the Internet, you can also network in online newsgroups and discussion boards. You have to cultivate relationships and share you ideas, information and resources both offline and online.
